The twist ending of The Others is basically just another "they were dead all along" reveal, but it's so well done and adds so much to the overall narrative that it really works. In The Others, a woman, Grace, moves in to a new house with her two children, and they begin to hear strange noises and other typical haunted house occurrences. The daughter in particular starts drawing pictures of a family she claims to have seen walking around. From this point on, you assume you can probably predict where everything is going. But not so fast... The house is indeed haunted, but not in the way you'd expect: it turns out that Grace and her children are all dead, and they're the ghosts haunting the house, after the distraught mother lost it and turned a gun on everyone The family they keep seeing are the real, living occupants. Without even knowing it, we've been watching a haunted house movie from the perspective of the ghosts, and that instantly makes you want to see the film over again. It also transforms what appeared to be another Amityville Haunting style movie into a really interesting one about a mother coping with something horrible she did, and though we've seen the twist of the characters being dead dozens of time, this one is genuinely unique.
