2. Casablanca
We all know Casablanca, the epic tale of action and suspense, with constant gun fights and a massive ensemble cast. A pretty typical film noir in an exotic location, it features a minor romantic sub plot amongst a story of random killings. Wait, what?! The trailer for Casablanca is incredibly misleading from the very off, focusing almost entirely on the rare bouts of action and the exotic locale. Its vaguely understandable to play up your more crowd pleasing elements, but this is so hilariously over the top and distant from itself that it feels almost like its advertising a different movie. Calling bar owner Rick the most dangerous man and framing him in such a dark manner is ridiculously off the point, teasing unnecessary excitement. Its very much a product of its time; the trailer appears to tick all the film noir boxes, most notably in painting Ilsa as a classic femme fatal. You can imagine there was less of a concern for correct advertising and more for bums on seats, which its reasonable to say the trailer will have provoked to some degree; preying on the wartime hysteria, the film was a moderate success at the time. Now a classic, theres no need to hide what Casablancas real nature amongst action and re-releases have opted for more suitable advertising campaigns. Perhaps if any of the examples of this list prove to have the longevity of Casablanca, then maybe well be treated to more honest trailers (although as Titanics re-release this year showed, sometimes trailers can be even more misleading the second time around). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJvlGh_FgcI
