10 Trailers That Should Make You Nervous About 2017's Biggest Movies
4. Thor: Ragnarok - Teaser Trailer
Though the trailer for the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok doesn't paint a picture of a bad-looking movie, per se (in fact, it has been well received), it does showcase a film that appears to be moving away from the previous films in the series massively on a tonal level.
Because Thor: Ragnarok has the familiar feel of a Guardians of the Galaxy film, going by the trailer, what with its popular soundtrack cues, excessive quipping, and a '80s retro vibe. Why is there an '80s vibe, exactly, when this movie is both set in the present and the title character has nothing to do with that decade? Who knows?
One of the most interesting things about the first two Thor movies, though, was the Shakespearean influence running through them. It was a neat aspect that set them apart from the other films in the MCU. With a Thor movie, you could revel in bold theatrics, a ton of backstabbing, and characters delivering wordy speeches in very large rooms; all of that appears to have been thrown out in favour of the light-hearted, knowing tone that all MCU movies are adopting. Farewell to melodrama!
The studio seem to have come to the conclusion that the Guardians approach is the right approach for every movie, then, given how successfully the comical vibe has gone down at the box office. It's a shame that this trailer seems to suggest the Thor movies have lost their identity somewhat, though. Thor's haircut isn't just for show; it's a metaphor for the overhaul of the entire series, apparently.
