It's not uncommon to find that films which were a total mess had masses of footage removed during production, and that's certainly the case with The Amazing Spider-Man 2, a movie that was crushed beneath the weight of its sequel setups.

An ending featuring the return of Peter Parker's father and a sequence that would have set up Chris Cooper's Norman Osborn as the main villain in the next movie were among the scenes that were canned, but there was also an entire subplot the trailers alluded to which was omitted from the final cut of the Marc Webb sequel.

"Oscorp had you under surveillance," says Dane DeHaan's Harry Osborn in the film's debut trailer, seemingly warning Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker that the evil organisation has big plans for him. When Peter asks him why they're watching him, his friend simply replies "Isn't that the question of the day?"

On this evidence, it looks like Amazing Spider-Man 2 was holding back yet more secrets for those sequels which never ended up happening. If the film had spent as much time on its narrative as it did on Easter eggs and unnecessary villains, maybe there would have been room for this subplot to play out.
