10 Trailers That Were Better Than The Film
4. The Counsellor
Sorry, Ridley, we all love you, but when you have such a large output of films there's bound to be some bombs in there.
Scott collaborating with celebrated writer Cormac McCarthy and a stunning ensemble cast including Fassbender, Pitt, Cruz, Bardem and Diaz? It all felt too good to be true. But then the trailer came along: it was stylish; it felt raw, emotional, powerful; it alternated pace in time with AWOLNATION's 'Sail', whilst teasing some tense action with beautiful cinematography.
Remember... it felt too good to be true.
Somehow, despite there being so much talent involved in one film, it sunk with critics and general viewers alike. Despite the high-octane action enticed in the trailer it was used very sparingly. That's okay, sometimes the best action is more effective when given in small doses, but for that we have to care about the characters. Unfortunately though it was difficult to care about any of them. They felt like caricatures who spoke in philosophical riddles instead of having real personalities.
That aforementioned raw, emotional power was nowhere to be found, and the only power to be found was the power of a well crafted trailer.
