10 Trailers That Were Better Than The Film

3. True Story

Kick Ass 2 Joker
Fox Searchlight Pictures

True Story is by no means a bad film: it features a fascinating story about a suspected murderer reaching out to a journalist and boasts two fantastic dramatic performances from usual funny men Jonah Hill and James Franco. So, what's the problem?

The problem is the trailer is a lie, like the lies told by the morally impure characters of the film. The first half of the trailer is fine and honest, advertising the film for what it is - a slow-paced drama that explores the intricacies of journalism - but then just over halfway through the trailer there comes a big change.

Jonah Hill's onscreen wife, Felicity Jones, receives a creepy phone call from Hill's writing subject, the naturally rather creepy Franco. And then an equally jarringly creepy string score begins to compliment the tension. And then there's a close-up of James Franco's handcuffed hands that suggests only one thing. Capped off by a close-call of a car crash, that, incidentally, is completely contrived and has no impact on the narrative.

Suddenly the drama has turned into a psychological thriller, but the film itself is a much more conventional drama. A good drama, but a drama nonetheless. Lying is not to be accepted.
