Introduced early on in Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back, a loveable tauntaun is seen galloping across the Hoth snow, with Luke Skywalker's steed going by the name of Riba.

Sadly, of course, it wouldn't be long before this tusked creature would be slaughtered by a terrifying wampa, and she'd then be consumed by the vicious snow beast within its cave.

It's a deeply unsettling sequence and one that told the world just how deadly the hairy monster truly was. But it gets even more disturbing once you learn about a rather dark fact that you'll instantly wish you could un-hear.

Riba, the innocent tauntaun that was taken too soon, was actually pregnant here!

So, not only did the wampa eat a precious reptomama that day, it also ate some baby tauntlets.

This distressing detail was revealed in the From A Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back book in the She Will Keep Them Warm story. Oh, and Han Solo's tauntaun that eventually died in the snow? Well, that was Riba's mother.

Put simply, multiple generations of tauntaun all bit the dust in the opening act of Episode V. Nice.
