10 Trends That Are Killing Movies

2. Remaking Everything

Remakes, remakes, remakes, they're everywhere, and no more pervasive has their presence been than in contemporary Hollywood. The main problem with the way they go about it is that they don't even try remaking films that could benefit from a remake most of the time; they just remake popular films from 20 or 30 years ago, hoping that they can exploit an ignorant generation who has never heard of the original film, and most of the time, it works (at least financially). The problem really arises when studios decide to remake films that are truly a product of their time; take Paul Verhoeven's sci-fi masterpiece Total Recall, and the upcoming re-do of Red Dawn. These films are thoroughly products of their time, and to transpose them onto our contemporary setting proves troublesome, because it's not what they were designed for. Horror remakes are also a problem, in that they're thoroughly unimaginative, but at least they normally seem to grab at the essence of the source material. How about green-lighting some original projects instead?
