10 True Stories Explained By Horror Movies
4. Apollo 18
Apollo 18 claims "there's a reason we've never gone back to the moon," and that reason is far more sinister than financial inability. Where real life dictates that the Apollo 18 moon mission was actually cancelled for budgetary reasons and the last manned moon visit was undertaken with Apollo 17, this film lives and dies by a worldwide conspiracy that sees it better for the public to not know about the real Apollo 18's actual successful landing back in 1974.
Going ahead as a Department of Defense mission under sworn secrecy, the heart of the movie lies in the idea that alien life exists and thrives on the moon. Moon rocks - yes, the rocks themselves - function as a disguise for big old nasty space spiders, and these spindly monsters infect the visiting astronauts before masterminding a plan to leave the moon's orbit.
Of course, we've brought moon rock samples back to earth in previous space missions, meaning there's potential that mimics are amongst us on earth already by Apollo 18's insane conjecture.
It's a lot, but hell, there's surely a tiny, embarrassing question mark many have hanging over why we REALLY haven't seen the moon again in recent years. Though perhaps that's just the conspiracy theories talking at this point...
