10 'True Stories' You Should Take With A Pinch Of Salt

8. Gangster Squad (2013)

Movie Poster Cliches - Teaser Titles - Gangster Squad

Gangster Squad was a shockingly poor and generic film, which somehow managed to attract the attention of respected actors like Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin. The first thing you see in this is 'based on true events' but after watching it you know it was clearly false... either that or every single movie cliche known to man really did happen to Sergeant John O'Mara. The film is set in 1949 and shows crime boss Mickey Cohen being arrested at the end. The time frame of the film isn't clear but the events definitely take less than two years so at the very latest they are suggesting Cohen was arrested in 1951. He may have been arrested in 1951 but he certainly was not sent to Alcatraz - that didn't happen until 1961. Cohen was also not arrested for murder, drug-dealing, assault; murdering a police officer, attempted murder or any other thing we see him do... he was arrested for tax evasion. Of course, the film would have been a bit weird if that was its ending but it's the truth! Why make a film about a real life criminal but then have him arrested and jailed ten years earlier than he actually was? Surely in those ten years he got up to things that were worthy of being written about? Unless he stopped all his murdering and tried to settle down only to get caught for tax evasion... The film is painfully cheesy and generic so by the time the ending comes I'm sure you will already have guessed its events aren't true.
