10 Truly Awful Movies That Made Obscene Amounts Of Money
4. Grown Ups (2010)
Budget: $80m Total Box Office: $271.4m US Home Video Sales: $57.7m For some reason, Adam Sandler has remained one of the most popular and bankable movie stars in the world for three decades. Since 1998, no less than sixteen of his movies have earned over $100m at the worldwide box office, which is an incredible track record for any actor. His brand of comedy definitely has its audience, which goes some way to explaining why this humorless and woefully juvenile effort became the biggest hit of his entire career. I fail to understand how this movie could possibly cost $80m to make when it's about a bunch of guys spending a weekend at a lake. Then you remember that Sandler produced and co-wrote the movie, which was directed by longtime collaborator Dennis Dugan and stars his friends Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider. I'm guessing they didn't work for scale. If watching Sandler and his buddies enjoy themselves while making a series of painfully unfunny jokes is your thing, then you'll get a kick out of it. If not, it's another self-indulgent ego trip for the actor and his co-stars. The sequel was even worse, but only earned $25m less at the worldwide box office. Nonetheless, like most Sandler movies Grown Ups took the domestic top spot with a $40.5m opening weekend on its way to becoming the actor's biggest success yet with a final total of $162m, with a further $109m coming from overseas markets. The US home video release saw the movie shift almost 3.5m units and when added to the theatrical gross, Grown Ups has generated well over $300m in revenue despite being one of Sandler's worst movies. It's not as offensively bad as Jack and Jill but then again, what is?
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
