10 Truly Awful Movies That Made Obscene Amounts Of Money
3. Wild Hogs (2007)
Budget: $60m Total Box Office: $253.6m US Home Video Sales: $93m Let this sink in for a moment; Wild Hogs was one of the biggest comedy hits of 2007. It made more money than Knocked Up, Superbad and Blades of Glory which were all released the same year. While not an offensively bad movie, the tale of four friends coping with a mid-life crisis by forming a motorcycle gang is formulaic to the point of downright banality. You can almost hear John Travolta, Tim Allen, William H Macy and Martin Lawrence going through the motions as the main quartet, indulging in predictable physical comedy spots as they go on what could be described as 'coming of middle-age' adventure. The jokes are flat and the narrative achingly predictable, with a noticeable shortage of laughs for a movie billed as a comedy. Still, Wild Hogs opened at number one with a $36.9m domestic debut and went on to gross $168.2m in the US, which accounted for almost two thirds of the worldwide total. In the States, the movie proved to be as much of a phenomenon on home video as it was in theaters, selling almost 5.7 million units. Maybe it appealed to the older male demographic who had always wanted to buy a Harley and hit the road, because I can barely fathom how theatrical and DVD grosses saw this movie earn around $400m in total.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
