10 Truly Awful Superhero Movie & TV Love Interests
2. Gwen Stacy - Spider-Man 3
There's nothing wrong with Gwen Stacy in theory. Emma Stone put in an admirable performance as Gwen in the two most recent Spiderman films. But in the third of the Tobey Maguire films, kindly referred to as a travesty by most audiences, the strange decision to make Gwen part of an awkward love triangle combined with absolutely zero chemistry between her and Peter Parker create a genuinely terrible character.
And honestly it's hard to even blame Bryce Dallas Howard for it. She does fine with what she has. This film came out before everyone learned that what she does best are those those conniving, manipulative, underhanded roles, and that her screen presence tends to present in that way even when she's playing a perfectly normal, sweet character.
But like many elements of the film, it was just a misguided decision to even include her character in this capacity. For some reason, Spider-Man 3 feels like they knew it was going to be their last film (little did they know there would be two reboots in fifteen years) and they just decided to throw in all of the characters. All of the villains, all of the love interests, the more the merrier.
The film, and especially the romantic relationships depicted within, definitely suffer for it.
