5. Begbie (Trainspotting)

Francis Begbie is the kind of guy who makes your heart sink when you see him strutting into the pub, the kind of guy who will pick a fight with you for looking at him when he barges in, but also berate you if you don't acknowledge him. This infamous Scottish sociopath is one of the key players in Danny Boyle's classic Brit-pic Trainspotting, and despite staying clean in a world where everyone around him casually shoots up heroin, he still manages to be the most truly hateful character on the screen. Sadistic, remorseless, and utterly terrifying, Begbie is a bit like the working class equivalent of Goodfellas' Tommy DeVito. A human ticking time bomb who explodes and recharges at regular intervals, Begbie is so violent that even his 'friends' tread on eggshells around him. Whilst many of the characters in Trainspotting become addicted to the numbing lull of needles, Robert Carlyle's moustache-wearing madman is simply addicted to violence. Just seeing him on the screen in Trainspotting is enough to make you consider calling the police.
