10 TV Show Finales Fans Totally Rejected
5. Roseanne
After nine seasons and 222 episodes, all-timer sitcom Roseanne wrapped up its original run with a gob-smackingly off-kilter ending, revealing that the largely-panned season - in which the Conners won the lottery - was a fabrication written by Roseanne (Roseanne Barr) herself.
Numerous aspects of the central dynamic were suddenly revealed to be different in reality, worst of all that Dan (John Goodman) had actually died of his heart attack in season eight.
While on one hand it somewhat explained the ninth season's increasing outlandishness, it was ultimately an extremely sour note on which to say goodbye to the Conners, favouring a tricky rug-pull over simple emotional honesty.
Fans were unfortunately left to stew on the finale for almost 21 years before the show was revived for a tenth season, though even that well-received do-over - which smartly retconned Dan's death - was tainted by Barr getting the show cancelled after making racist remarks on Twitter.
It was then mercifully revived as the sans-Roseanne spin-off The Conners, even if killing Roseanne by way of an accidental opioid overdose was an undeniable bummer.
