4. Basic Instinct (1992)
Michael Douglas plays a detective called Nick Curran who has a troubled past with alcohol and drugs. He is a really good detective so the police want to keep in with him despite his disgraced status. Catherine Tramell is a beautiful, wealthy writer of pulp fiction. She may or may not have killed a rockstar in a violent fashion with an icepick whilst they were having sex. Catherine passes a lie detector and Nick, who is taken off the case, falls into an infatuation with Catherine which dredges up all of his bad old habits. There are lesbians, there is Sharon Stone's punani, there are sex scenes that go on for too long. Basic Instinct features probably the most perverted Bunny Boiler on this list in the shape of Catherine Tramell. I am a huge Paul Verhoeven fan - but this fandom is restricted mainly to his early Dutch films which have a class, a sparkle and a lustiness that is far above anything he ever directed in Hollywood (Basic Instinct included). The sex in Basic Instinct is fairly explicit and of course the 'Sharon Stone crosses her legs' bit ensured the film's notoriety and cemented its status as one of 1992's event movies. I suppose, like Verhoeven's infamous Showgirls, it is an entertaining piece of fluff with its 'is she a Bunny Boiler or is she not?' plotline taking many twists and turns. Apparently, the film was a tribute to Hitchcock but it is way too sleazy and sensational to work as an homage to the great director, who is probably banging the lid of his coffin and shaking his fists in disgust at Verhoeven's audacity to try and pull this one off as being Hitchcockian. The film does have a large cult following and it is my opinion that Catherine Tramell is established as a sex mad murderous Bunny Boiler by the end of the film.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
