Allie and Sam have a nice relationship together until Allie finds out that Sam has been boffing his ex-missus. When she finds this out, she kicks Sam out. Allie is a software developer and in a business lunch with Mitchell Myerson, a fashion house designer, she sells her revolutionary new software to him for a very low price based on the promise he will spread the word about the software. Allie advertises for a flatmate. Hedra Carlson - or Hedy as Allie dubs her - moves in and immediately begins to encroach upon Allie's life. She erases Sam's pleas for reconciliation from the answer phone. She buys Allie a labrador pup called Buddy. Eventually Sam and Allie reconcile and Hedy is raging. Buddy 'falls' out of the window. Myerson tries to rape Allie but doesn't succeed. Hedy changes her hair and appearance so that she is a doppelganger of Allie's. Her behaviour is outrageous - pretending to be Allie and performing fellatio on Sam, gouging Sam'e eye out with a stiletto thereby killing him, taking Allie hostage. The latter leads to a knock down, drag them out battle between the two women and Allie must use all of her wits to take down this bunny boiler extraordinaire. Starring Bridget Fonda as Allie and Jennifer Jason Leigh as Hedy, the two actresses put in excellent performances. I have watched the film several times and it is very entertaining - even upon multiple viewings. It was directed by Barbet Schroeder, whose previous work I admire (MaƮtresse). It is not the world's most profound film, and many people would dismiss it as trite nonsense but I think the film is fairly suspenseful and features a good baddie in the shape of Hedy. The film is another instance in this list of attempting to illustrate Borderline Personality Disorder. Yet again it portrays the sufferer as a homicidal maniac when the average person with the illness primarily hurt themselves and not others. Single White Female is a bit of a smear on people with this condition. But aside from that, Schroeder injects the film with lots of nudity and sex which given his pedigree is not really surprising. The film is an amusing way to pass 90 minutes of your life but the ending is disappointingly predictable. Hedy remains a persistent and determined member of the Bunny Boiler clique.
My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
