5. How Did The Joker Really Get His Scars? - The Dark Knight (2008)

One of the most interesting elements of Heath Ledger€™s Joker that undoubtedly helped him stand apart from the cinematic pack was his origin, or lack thereof; unlike previous Joker's, whose stories provided the main arc, we learnt nothing about Ledger€™s origins. This makes sense, as throughout the majority of his appearances in the comics any backstory of the Joker has been kept vague or presented in a highly subjective manner. With that being said, any Batman fan would be lying to themselves if they said they weren't intrigued as to what, exactly, happened to this man in order for him to transform into such a crazed, deranged maniac (one with a presumably genius level I.Q, at that)? The character, of course, tells multiple contradictory stories with regards to how he got his infamous facial scars. Each one seems plausible in their own right. Did he mutilate himself? Did his father give him the scars? Perhaps the best answer would be, if you're going to have an origin story, keep it multiple choice.
