1. George Lucas Lied To The Cast And Crew To Preserve The Twist Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
Im not sure how the secret was kept after release (you imagine once on kid had seen the film word would have quickly spread round the playground), but when making The Empire Strikes Back George Lucas had an ingenious way of keeping Lukes real parentage unknown. He flat out lied about it. The shooting script for ESB had the climactic duel between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker, but the dialogue took an unexpected turn after Lukes hand came off; it was revealed Obi-Wan killed Anakin. Never actually intended to be the twist, it was a cover for the one we all know. Outside of the key creative team (Lucas, director Irvin Kirshner and the films screenwriters), Mark Hamill was the only one to know, told just before shooting the scene to make sure his nos werent too feeble (no worries there). It seems excessive, but you have to remember this was the biggest movie ever at the time. When seeing the film for the first time, the duped David Prowse (who was the man in the suit for the original trilogy) turned to Lucas and said if hed known the twist hed have played it differently. How? Would he have gestured harder?
