10 Under-Appreciated Recent Movies Destined To Become Cult Classics

9. Annihilation

Neon Demon
Paramount

The Neon Demon’s debate doesn’t reside between critics and audiences, but the minority of fans who brand it a modern masterpiece and those who see it as misogynistic exhibition. The film pleads to be loved or hated; those who can stomach it and appreciate its gross-out horror will be over-the-moon while those looking for a typical scary movie will be disturbed beyond belief.

Nicolas Winding Refn is an acquired taste to put it lightly and many of his films, this included, don’t sit too well with general audiences. The film’s $7 million budget was met by a $1.3 million box office haul; a gargantuan flop for even a modestly priced film.

The way people talk about the 2016 romp now though, and you never would have guessed it was so poorly received. It has become an infamous film in the horror genre that only “true” fanatics of the genre has seen. Winding may not be a box office darling, but his films are sure to be discussed far into the future.
