10 Under-Appreciated Recent Movies Destined To Become Cult Classics
5. Brawl In Cell Block 99
Grindhouse and B-movies seem like a thing of the past; and
that’s something that S. Craig Zahler wants to change. Brawl in Cell Block 99
is an ultraviolent romp that puts Vince Vaughn in perhaps the meatiest role of
his career. The film was picked up by the extremely small distribution company
RLJE and really didn’t see the light of any theatres.
The film gained traction when it hit home media, but even then, was only discussed by the knowingest in the know. The movie is not rated, solely because it never went through the process of being rated by the MPAA. Critics loved it, but not even that was enough to get eyeballs on it.
Zahler’s third film, Dragged Across Concrete, garnered less stellar reviews and an even more abysmal return on investment. Once Zahler’s talents as a filmmaker are recognized by a more widespread audience after one of his films hits big, Brawl in Cell Block 99 will be recognized as his magnum opus.
