10 Under-The-Radar Films You Have To See In 2016

6. The Neon Demon

Nicolas Winding Refn's last effort was the infinitely disappointing Only God Forgives, so nobody would blame you if you hadn't heard of his imminent The Neon Demon. His first feature without Ryan Gosling since 2009's Valhalla Rising, this is sketchy ground - especially if it's assumed that his recent successes have been influenced by the uber-popular Gosling in any way. Although let's not forget that Bronson was an absolute triumph and Drive is just one of the slickest, coolest films of the 21st Century. So, details of the plot are rather thin on the ground but the setting is LA and the characters are supermodels who are willing to sink to unreal depths of depravity to achieve youth and beauty - suggestions include cannibalism in order to consume said youth and beauty of their victims. Elle Fanning and Christina Hendricks, a Refn favourite, will star alongside the unpredictable Keanu Reeves (who ever knows what that guy is going to do next?) The fact that this film has been kept under wraps since production began could be a bad omen, but it could mean that there's something special to come, and with the absence of a trailer you'll just have to dwell on the fact that Refn, although incredibly Marmite to some, consistently delivers stunningly visual films that are unique and interesting at the very least. The Neon Demon is expected to have a 2016 release.
