10 Underdogs We're Rooting For At The Oscars

6. June Squibb (Best Supporting Actress - Nebraska)

As already mentioned, Sally Hawkins did a fantastic job in this category and it'd be great to see her win, but even more so than Hawkins, I'd love to see Nebraska's June Squibb score a major upset over Nyong'o and Lawrence. It's fair to say that the Academy loves to respect its older talents with a nomination now and then (just look at Gloria Stuart for Titanic, or Emmanuelle Riva for Amour last year), though these rarely lead to a win: the nomination itself is normally considered the win. For my money, Squibb was genuinely the best of show last year. Her outrageously funny, wry performance helped balance the movie's tone, and she served as a brilliant counter-point to Bruce Dern's mopey sad sack. It would be a great win, but there's virtually no chance of it happening.
