10 Underrated Animated Movies That Deserve A Second Chance

6. Treasure Planet

Tintin Movie
Disney

Treasure Planet is a great retelling of Treasure Island but set in space. Often movies set in space fail to land with audiences, there just isn't much for people to relate to when the movie takes place on completely alien lands. While that's only a half-truth in regards to Treasure Planet, it potentially explains why the movie failed to even recoup its budget at the box office.

Another potential explanation for Treasure Planet's collapse, is the time in which it released. Starting after Tarzan's release in 1999 and ending with Tangled in 2010, Walt Disney Animation Studios had a pretty huge slump. Barring a handful of great exceptions like Lilo & Stitch, The Princess and the Frog, and The Emperor's New Groove, this was the worst period in Disney's animated history.

During that decade-long slump, Treasure Planet was one of the casualties. Perhaps it was the result of poor marketing, perhaps it was guilty by association, but no matter the reason Treasure Planet is a very good movie.
