When Snow White and the Seven Dwarves was released in 1937, it opened up a whole new realm of cinema to filmmakers and audiences alike.

Over the years, the medium has only grown more popular and inventive, with big-name studios like Pixar, Disney and DreamWorks constantly pushing the boundaries of what animated movies can achieve.

Because animated movies are so popular and so frequently released these days, it's fair to say that a lot of truly remarkable films have slipped under the radar and are in need of being dug back up.

Such is the case with these 10 movies - each one sporting their own signature style, stand-out premise and wonderous innovation, each underappreciated following their release or forgotten entirely since they hit peoples' screens.

Whether a challenging adult dramedy or a should-be classic family adventure, a philosophical journey through dreams or an hilarious meta comedy about man's best friend, here are 10 shockingly underrated animated movies you just have to see...

10. My Life As A Courgette (2016)

Following the death of his troubled mother, Icare - who goes by the nickname Courgette - is sent to an orphanage by a caring police officer called Raymond, and for the first time in his life begins to build a series of genuinely loving relationships.

My Life As A Courgette is an expressive stop-motion masterclass that pits a young boy against a world he doesn't fully understand or feel comfortable in, only to realise that he's not alone in his troubles or fears.

With beautiful character design, impeccable voice work and a strong sense of family and unconditional love, the comedy-drama makes for the perfect slice of family-friendly fun.

It's zany, odd and peculiarly funny, but also challenging, moving and constantly surprising, and considering it barely made half of its budget back at the box office, it's fair to say it's an underappreciated gem that everyone should be falling in love with.
