Charlie Kaufman has made a series of powerful and challenging movies over the years, but few quite as fascinating and criminally overlooked as his and Duke Johnson's stop-motion dramedy Anomalisa.

Critical lauded at the time of its 2015 release, the film sank at the box office and has since slipped for public memory, despite it being one of the more unforgettable dramas you're likely to get your hands on.

It follows Michael (David Thewlis), a depressed middle-aged man who sees everyone around him in the same way - from their appearance to their voice. That is, until he meets the captivating Lisa (Jennifer Jason Leigh), and finds himself opening up for the first time in his life.

Anomalisa is a beautiful, heartwrenching work from two filmmakers at the absolute height of their powers. Michael's journey is hilarious, tragic, cruel and - despite the animation and surreal nature of the plot - frequently relatable.

It won't be for everyone, but as a unique viewing experience it simply begs to be seen.
