3. Bolt (2008)

Don't worry, though - it's not all doom and gloom.

In 2008, securing a solid box office return before becoming yet another lost gem, Bolt burst into the world and offered a fresh and exciting spin on the age-old man's best friend story.

Bolt (voiced by a genuinely fantastic John Travolta), is a dog who believes he's the badass superhero spy he portrays on TV, alongside his loving "person" Penny (Miley Cyrus). After an accident, Bolt is lost and, as he searches for Penny in a world he doesn't understand, comes to realise he's just a normal dog, and that he doesn't know how to be a real pet.

It's a predictable but endlessly fun movie, full of explosive action, amazingly funny humour and a great voice cast. It also serves as a fitting critique of the Hollywood machine, and an affecting tale of friendship any dog lover would be happy to watch on repeat.
