10 Underrated Disney Films Everyone Forgets
7. Return To Oz
Ever wonder what really happened to Dorothy and all of her new friends following the events of The Wizard of Oz? Well, this Disney live action flick from 1985 answers that question for those who didn't read the books.
This movie is one that I enjoyed immensely as a kid, not to mention one that terrified me too. With themes like mental illness, imprisonment, and overall dystopia leading the way, Return to Oz paints a picture of how not everything was all sunshine and rainbows after the defeat of the Wicked Witch of the West.
What's also interesting is that Return to Oz is a bit unconventional in that its director, Walter Murch, is an Academy Award-winning sound designer and film editor, having won for Apocalypse Now and The English Patient. This is his one feature directing credit.
That aside, the dark themes, strong visuals and Jim Henson puppetry help carry a film that has since become a cult classic after flopping at the box office. Oh, and a young Fairuza Balk did a great job as Dorothy too.
