10 Underrated Films By Amazing Directors
5. Steven Spielberg — Duel
While it’s gained something of a cult following over the last few years, there was a time when Duel was comparatively unknown. But this really is one of Spielberg’s best films, which is saying something, because he very rarely releases a bad one, but there is an undeniable charm to Duel that has gone unnoticed for many years.
Dennis Weaver as David Mann, a salesman on a business trip, who is stalked on a remote highway in the Californian desert in a truck, Duel is the first full-length feature film that Spielberg ever did, and while it may not be the film that put him on the map, it certainly afforded him more license with films such as Jaws in later years.
While Duel takes the idea of the unknown and enforces it in a way that not only intrigues the audience but also scares the bejesus out of them, Duel also showcases Spielberg’s visual flair, his use of cutting and his attention to detail.
Duel may not be Spielberg’s most well-known film, but it’s definitely the film that started it all and it’s worthy of anyone’s filmography, especially someone as incredible as Steven Spielberg.
