10 Underrated Films From Great Directors
3. Yorgos Lanthimos - The Lobster
Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, known for such works as the cult classic Dogtooth and the critically acclaimed The Favourite is rising fast in the mainstream as his quirky dark comedies continue to attract new audiences. By far, his most outlandish and wholly unique film The Lobster is what deserves the most praise.
Set in a world where you are required to have a romantic partner, single people are sent to a hotel where they will stay for a set period of time looking for a significant other. If they fail to find one in the allotted time then they are turned into an animal of their choosing. It's an original and ingenious premise that leans heavily into being weird and odd with all the characters speaking in an exaggerated monotonous voice.
Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz lead an exceptional cast who fearlessly embrace the strange otherworldliness of Lanthimos' story which feels incredibly thought through and deliberate. The Lobster is one of the most enigmatic films in recent years and is superbly directed by Lanthimos in his English language debut. It is unashamedly strange and that is what makes it so special.
