Now a major Hollywood director with credits such as Sicario and Arrival to his name, Denis Villeneuve's best film is easily Incendies. A traumatising and unrelenting look at a woman's life in an unnamed Middle-Eastern country torn apart by war. After Nawal Marwan dies in Canada, her will instructs her two adult children to return to her home country and find their father who they thought was dead and their brother they never knew existed.

Told in both the present and during Nawal's time there, we see the brutality of Nawal's difficult life which will leave you emotionally exhausted. Unflinching in its approach, the film is utterly harrowing as it exhibits all the horrors that war can bring to a country. The film is hard to watch at times, but it never feels exploitative and every painful act you witness is there for a clear reason.

Incendies has one of the most heart-breaking and dark endings in all of cinema that will leave you shaken as the sad truth of Nawal's life is revealed. It is a haunting work which is exceptionally directed by the future Blade Runner 2049 director. Incendies is not light viewing but it is immensely powerful from start to finish.
