Before creating horror sensations X and Pearl, Ti West helmed indie gem The Innkeepers.

Set within an old hotel during the weekend before it closes its doors permanently, this flick sees Sara Paxton and Pat Healy star as two hotel employees obsessed with the building’s resident ghost, Madeline O'Malley. While it’s Luke (Healy) who runs a website dedicated to the legend of the spirit said to roam the halls, it’s Claire (Paxton) who has some terrifying run-ins with O'Malley, with a surprise bedroom visit being one of the film's most intense scenes.

Healy and Paxton carry the script with charismatic performances which enable viewers to become fully invested in their quirky friendship long before the ghost makes their grand appearance. And when the spirit does begin to make herself known to Claire, the suspense is gradually wound until it hits a feverish boiling point in the final act.

The almost-deserted hotel is the ideal place for a ghost to call their home. Not only does the dated decor and lack of guests give the impression that the building is like a ghost itself, but the claustrophobic setting ensures viewers will become gripped by the creeping atmosphere.
