10 Underrated Ghost Story Movies You Need To See
8. Crimson Peak (2015)
Known for blending elements of fantasy and horror to create imaginative tales that are as wondrous as they are creepy, Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has proven his prowess for telling enthralling ghost stories with the Devil's Backbone. However, another of his spooky tales which often goes overlooked is Crimson Peak.
Whereas Devil’s Backbone took viewers to a haunted orphanage during the Spanish Civil War, this 2015 film transports audiences to Edwardian England for a different flavour of horror.
When budding American author Edith (Mia Wasikowska) meets wealthy English baronet Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston), the pair strike up an intoxicating romance, with Edith eventually moving to Sharpe’s crumbling family home to stay with her new husband and his sister Lucile (Jessica Chastain)
There, it becomes apparent that something sinister is happening in the manor as blood-red apparitions warn Edith about the danger she faces. As Edith learns more about the house and its past, she eventually uncovers its unpleasant secrets buried underneath.
While the ghosts’ grotesque appearances are genuinely frightening, Crimson Peak isn’t a typical haunted house film. Rather, it’s a grand gothic romance in which the ghosts are a manifestation of the violent love story that lies at the heart of this underrated gem.
