10 Underrated Ghost Story Movies You Need To See

6. Ghost Stories (2017)

The Innkeepers
Lionsgate

Written and directed by Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman, Ghost Stories is a chilling anthology based on the filmmakers’ stage play of the same name.

In it, Nyman stars as Philip Goodman, a television host who’s devoted his life’s work to debunk fraudulent psychics. However, when he’s challenged by a famous paranormal investigator to look into three unexplained cases, Goodman discovers that not everything is as it seems.

His task takes him to three people, each of whom have had their own unnerving encounter with the supernatural. All three segments are as terrifying as the last, with each ghostly appearance handled with pitch-perfect suspense which gradually cranks up the tension to nail-biting effect. The most haunting of which being a neurotic youngster’s (Alex Lawther) late-night brush with a demon where his peculiar family is stranger than any ghost story.

With a touch of gallows humour occasionally alleviating the tension, the real chills of this anthology stem from the writers' ability to connect each case to a deeper layer of psychological terror. As events near the final act and things become more surreal, it becomes apparent that Goodman’s own ghosts are more terrifying (and tragic) than anything he's investigated.
