10 Underrated Ghost Story Movies You Need To See
7. His House (2020)
In His House, writer-director Remi Weekes crafts a ghostly tale that’s as unsettling as it is poignant in his feature debut.
When Bol and his wife Rial (played wonderfully by Sope Dirisu and Wunmi Mosaku) arrive in the UK after fleeing their war-torn village in Sudan, the couple find it difficult to settle into their new lives. They struggle to assimilate with British culture, their neighbours treat them as outsiders, and the ghost of their young daughter has followed them to their run-down flat after drowning during the perilous boat trip to the UK.
What starts as scratches emanating from the walls soon becomes harrowing confrontations between Bol and the various spirits which reside within the crumbling walls of the house. As petrifying as these moments are, though, the real horror in this film is rooted in something that’s far more human than supernatural.
Shocking truths are learned about the couple’s escape throughout the course of the feature, which question whether they are the good people that they believe themselves to be. These ghosts act as haunting metaphors for the pair’s guilt and trauma, with the film’s conclusion offering a poignant reflection on living with the ghosts of the past.
