7. The Ladder Death - Shutter

Seasoned horror nerds will recall the noughties as a veritable hell scape of sanitized PG-13 remakes and so, so many J-horror clones.

After the one-two punch of The Ring and The Grudge both succeeding at the US box office in remade, Americanized form, the world went mad for lank-haired ghost girls and you couldn't throw a stone in a video store (yes, they used to exist) without hitting a half dozen Samaras, Kayakos, and Kuchisake-onnas.

Of course almost every Japanese horror remake which followed was a cheap cash-in like 2008's soulless One Missed Call, and for the most part the same year's Shutter is no exception.

Starring Dawson's Creek hero Joshua Jackson, the film follows the haunting of two newlyweds after their involved in a car accident with a (lank-haired) young girl. It's a predictable enough entry into a forgettable enough horror trend, save for one moment which will stick with viewers long after the film has faded from memory.

Caught climbing down a fire escape in a rainstorm late at night, one unfortunate character encounters the ghost rapidly crawling down toward him, eyes wide and limbs cracking, leaving him to choose between death by falling and death by... that thing
