10 Underrated Horror Movie Remakes

1. Maniac (2012)

13 Ghosts Matthew Lillard
IFC Midnight

This Elijah Wood starring remake of the 1980 film Maniac appeared completely out of nowhere to shock audiences, then quietly drifted into obscurity which is a shame because it's a beautiful, stylish take on a journey into the mind of a disturbed young man.

It follows a man with schizophrenia who runs a mannequin shop, that routinely stalks and kills women at night. We get to see these grisly scenes direct through his own POV, making sure you can't escape a single detail of the numerous violent incidents.

The stunning synth-heavy soundtrack adds a ton of atmosphere, and the whole film is layered with a thick sense of dread as we watch our main killer slowly go more and more insane. The suspense is always high with such an unstable villain and there are several shocking scenes that will no doubt haunt your dreams for a while after the credits roll.

All the performances are done brilliantly too, with Wood bringing his usual boyish charms to disarm you before going into a rampage and scalping another poor woman.

It's a beautiful look into an ugly mind with a crazy amount of horrifying deaths and a superb visual style to put you directly in the feet of a murderer.

It's sadly underrated but more than worth your time if you have the stomach for it.
