10 Underrated Horror Movie Remakes

2. Suspiria (2018)

13 Ghosts Matthew Lillard
Amazon Films

Remaking Dario Argento's horror masterpiece seemed like sacrilege to many as the hyper-stylized original was so unique and in a league of its own, there didn't seem like you could do anything to top it.

Then Amazon studios announced this remake and it stood no chance against the backlash. Instead of the vibrant colors of the original, viewers were treated to an icy-cold, muted color palette with, at a glance, more standard looking filmmaking.

The film also chooses to root the movie in the realm of the realistic, with much of the terror gleamed from horrific Cronenberg-esque body horror rather than the 1977 version which eschews time and place, and the horror is more supernatural based.

These are large changes, and the plot diverges massively from the original, particularly the last act, but it's all the better for it as it completely owns the undeniably intriguing witch lore and expands on it immensely.

It is a tad too long, a whole hour more than the original, but it needed to be to fit in the extra plot elements and lures viewers in with its hypnotic pace and dreaded tone before shocking you to the core with extremely vile visuals.

Whether you're a fan or not, there was no denying this was a bold film and much better than the middling reviews that followed it would suggest. Give this twisted tale of witchcraft and interpretive dance a go and make your own mind up on its quality.
