10 Underrated Movies (That Were Just Misunderstood)

9. Beautiful Creatures

Sucker Punch
Warner Bros.

Think of this film more as Romeo and Juliet combined with witchcraft, and less of sparkly vampires with no personality. Dark secrets are unravelled as two young lovers discover family is a lot more complicated than what meets the eye.

The chemistry between the two lead characters feels realistic, a refreshing change in a mountain of modern teen flicks. The two leads are likeable, so much so that you begin to cheer them on as the film advances; you can feel the anguish that seeps through the screen as the plot plays out.

The biggest thing critics harp on about in their reviews is that Beautiful Creatures is a boring, low rent version of Twilight. Don't be deceived by the supernatural themes, and don't be put off by that critique because it is nothing like that. Beautiful Creatures has a heart, and it's an exciting frolic through the realms of supernatural love, with the ending tugging on those proverbial heartstrings. The plot is intelligent, with cauldrons full of magic that would make Harry Potter jealous.

Another point which is brought up is that it is too lovey-dovey, which does seem a little crazy since it is, at heart a teen romance. The focus is on the journey between the two young lovers, and what they go through together. They are level headed and not self-serving... In fact, quite the opposite. They make decisions, not only based on what they want, but for the person they love, going as far to sacrifice their own wants and needs for each other.
