10 Underrated Movies (That Were Just Misunderstood)
6. Dangerous Beauty
If you are a history nut, then you need to see Dangerous Beauty; it is everything you need in a great period film. You have feminism, romance, gorgeous costumes, and stunning Venetian scenery. The great plot that laced through it is a wonderful addition too.
What makes this film so good is the viewpoint; it is shown through the eyes of the strong-willed, and fiercely intelligent Veronica Franco, who is initiated into the world of the courtesan. Not only is she invited into the important circles of the elite men of Venice, but to the libraries and the knowledge that she constantly craves.
To the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, Dangerous Beauty is a fancy bodice ripper, that contains too much Venetian scenery including San Marco and far too many gondolas. That's like having a film centred on William Shakespeare without mentioning or showing Stratford Upon Avon. Venice is an integral part of the film, and without those significant visuals, it wouldn't have that sumptuous charm. Many films are made with the intention of women being infatuated with men, but Dangerous Beauty cleverly does the opposite and turns it into a fancy bodice ripper with a femininist twist.
No matter if you are male or female, old or young you need to see this film. It sends a powerful message that will stick with you that women don't need beauty to be successful or adored because wit and intelligence stand for a lot more in the long run. In the film, Veronica uses them to her advantage to captivate not only men, but the women she comes across too.
