10 Underrated Movies (That Were Just Misunderstood)

4. Sucker Punch

Sucker Punch
Warner Bros.

Overflowing with incredible scenery and gorgeous aesthetics, Sucker Punch is a story of survival that blurs the lines between reality and what really exists in Babydoll's head. This film gets into your head, and stamps a hard outline in your brain. Whether you love or hate it, you can't deny that it is memorable.

Exploitative and misogynistic, ugly, stupid, offensive, depressing, and sexist. Sucker Punch is one of the most controversial entries on this list, and it's not short on criticism. The opening scene with Emily Browning's haunting rendition of Sweet Dreams, combined with the evocative visuals is incredible, setting the tone for the rest of the movie.

The dark undertones continue, and at times they can be classed as uncomfortable, but not depressing. If critics consider Sucker Punch as sexist, then they haven't been paying attention; the whole point of the film is to show how badass women can truly be, who are fiercely in control of their own destiny, and they certainly don't need anyone to tell them otherwise.

Sucker Punch is about female empowerment, sticking up the middle finger to misogyny and telling it where it can go. These women are fighting for their freedom and they are doing it together, to escape from the men who demand they submit to them instead of their own desires. That thought alone is pretty damn beautiful.

Babydoll's 'dance' immerses you in these crazy little worlds, dragging you from reality straight into the heart of the main character as she fights for her freedom.

Emma Tucker hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
