10 Underrated Recent Movies That Deserve A Second Chance

1. A Most Violent Year

I really wanted to put an pre-Star Wars Oscar Isaac film on here given how The Force Awakens is treated as his breakout role despite him being a strong cinematic presence for years. My instinctive go-to would be Inside Llewyn Davis (for my money the Coen's finest film), but that's certainly risen in appreciation since its muted debut, recently placing joint tenth in the BBC poll of the best films of the decade, so instead let's go for the criminally underseen A Most Violent Year.

J.C. Chandor is one of the most adept up-and-coming directors (he placed top of my "Best Of The Decade" list), making three absolute knock-outs in record time. And while Margin Call is getting more plaudits over time as the true impact of the financial crisis sinks in and everybody appreciated Robert Redford's lone performance in All Is Lost, A Most Violent Year just isn't as beloved, despite being brilliant.

Think of it as the anti-Scarface, following a driven Oscar Isaac trying to stay on the right side of the law in the face of creeping criminal industrialisation, with some of the best realistic action from the genre in years.
