10 Underrated Recent Movies That Deserve A Second Chance
2. Trumbo
Trumbo was the movie that made Bryan Cranston into "Academy Award Nominee Bryan Cranston", but, that one talking point aside, the film didn't really get an easy ride. Heck, Cranston's Best Actor nomination last year has been chalked up to his lofty TV status and the Academy's nepotistic approach to movies about moviemaking, rather than what's on show.
And, sure, Trumbo is more of your standard biopic than something the recent exciting or challenging standouts of the genre (The Theory Of Everything, Love & Mercy), but it's still a solid film, with Jay Roach handling the emotion more than suitably. You feel Trumbo's strife as his victimised for his political outlook, even if the truth is twisted; Cranston is deserving of that nom as Dalton, bringing a total eccentricity that circumvents many of his recurring Walter White tics, yet still carries the weight of unfair persecution.
For me though, the real joy is seeing all the giants of Hollywood's Golden Age interact - there's few things more delightful than Edward G. Robinson drolly taking down John Wayne's lack of acting skill - and the pieces for crowd-pleaser Spartacus slotting into place. If the marketing had pushed that more, it could have had much better release.
