What truly sucks about being a movie connoisseur (yeah it sounds pretentious, but watch enough films and it just happens) is you eventually run out of great stuff, which appeals to your heart and soul directly. Nothing will ever take me back to the first time I saw Terminator 2: Judgment Day, which to this day was the most enthralling movie watching experience of my life. Rollerball took me back; as far as science fiction goes it is the most profound thing I've seen in years and it was released in 1976. Why did it take me so long to watch it? If you guessed the mixed reviews then give yourself the prize. The movie is a thrilling watch thanks to the murderous game it portrays. Think gladiatorial fist fights meets street hockey meets demolition derby with motorcycles and cannonballs. The game sequences in Rollerball are so well done and the game, although brutal, so entertaining you have to remind yourself it's just a movie. Watching professional hockey now, seeing the guys race around the rink and throwing punches I can't help, but hear the crowd from the movie as they chant for James Caan's character, "John-a-than! John-a-than! John-a-than!" Forget whatever ill feelings you might have towards Rollerball thanks to the 2002 remake. Stick to the classics and enjoy.
