10 More Underrated Sci-Fi Films You Need To Love

9. The Omega Man

Feel free to disagree, but The Omega Man starring Bible Epic/B-movie extraordinaire Charlton Heston is the best film adaptation of Richard Matheson's popular book I Am Legend. The Will Smith movie is okay, but the "vampires" look stupid and the ending just feels unnecessary unless you want to believe the main character was committing suicide. The Vincent Price movie, Last Man on Earth is also... okay. The Omega Man is the perfect blend of raunchy B-movie Sci-Fi set in a frightening dystopia. In this take of the story the vampires are light fearing mutants, who belong to a horrifying cult. It is their mission to either turn everyone in the world into a mutant to bring them under the canopy of their darkness or sacrifice them instead. Night after night they unsuccessfully storm the house of Neville (Heston) as he fights them off with machine guns, bombs, fire, and booze. By day this macho protagonist searches desperately for a cure, which leads him to discovering other normal people and his eventual doom. What is nice about The Omega Man is it's the only version of the movie which actually tried to give some characterization to the so-called vampires. The suspense is also heightened by the mutation's ability to seize anyone exposed to it at anytime. Meaning you turn your back on your closest friends one moment and the next they are pale, ghoulish nightmares coming at you with knives looking to make a sacrifice.
