10 More Underrated Sci-Fi Films You Need To Love

7. Naked Lunch

Indulge me one last time (last time I swear) to refer to my older article where I mentioned David Cronenberg's brilliantly queasy Videodrome being a Sci-Fi film many naturally overlook. His even stranger Naked Lunch falls into the same category except it manages to be less dark while being far more twisted. Not possible you say? This movie hits you square in the throat and stomach like a really strong, house special drink. Your initial thoughts are, "Eww... this is good?" and just when you think you're warmed up to it the morning after comes with a vengeance. The film, which is based on the semi-autobiographical book The Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs (his life must have been horrifying) follows a writer as he gets hooked on some serious bug drugs. This might leave some viewers questioning its validity of being science fiction, not unlike Videodrome, since the main character could be tripping all of the alien moments. Still, bugs or hallucinations aside, both the book and the movie receive the science fiction label and so it made the cut. There is definitely a method of genius behind the madness in Naked Lunch, which you wish at times would dial the disturbing content back to a dull roar. Some scenes in particular are not going to be leaving my mind for awhile such as giant, butt-talking bug typewriters, alien mugwamps enslaved in a crack dungeon so people can get high off their, ahem, bodily fluids, the warlock Julian Sands turning into a giant centipede to eat someone, and, oh yeah, my personal favorite, the H.R. Giger typewriter looking to get jiggy with anyone in sight. Okay, enough weirdness... but before we end would you mind rubbing some of that yellow powder on my lips?
