3. Salute Of The Jugger
If I ever get the chance to shake hands with screenwriter/director David Peoples I plan on skipping the five questions everyone in the universe asks him about Blade Runner. Instead I am going to thank him for having the guts to make this movie. Salute of the Jugger, also known as The Blood of Heroes, is the obscure gem in the rough completely forgotten by time. Bold and unique this movie is everything a lot of people look for in their science fiction: bleak and inspired. The story centers around a post-apocalyptic world where traveling bands of "juggers" play a game, which makes bare-knuckle boxing look like pee-wee Football. The film is like an extreme version of Rollerball where entertainment sports have basically digressed back to the bloody days of Gladiator death matches. It's a movie practically no one would pick up to watch just naturally. I attempted to sell my cousin once on watching Jugger with me. His response, "So you're telling me Rutger Hauer made another ultra weird movie in the 80s? Wait while I stop the press." Point taken, but this time don't let it stop you from giving this film a watch.
