10 Underrated Sci-Fi Sequels (That Deserve Way More Love)
9. Terminator: Dark Fate
There's a sad irony in the fact that Terminator: Dark Fate finally became the Terminator film to earn itself something of a positive reception and yet also became the one to fall victim to audience disinterest. Yes, nearly two decades of attempts to relaunch the franchise finally resulted in the audience tuning out... well, that, and the fact that T6 was just too darn expensive.
However, we shouldn't let the underperformance at the box office - or the negative reception of the previous sequels - take away from what was actually a pretty solid action flick.
Sure, it committed an unforgivable sin by replacing the beloved, compelling and well-developed John Connor with an underdeveloped Dani Ramos that, in spite of her badassery, felt like little more than a forced replacement. But Linda Hamilton's return as Sarah Connor infused the franchise with grit once again while Arnie was completely at home as the aged T-800, and the violence, mature narrative and attempted originality allowed it to stand out from the nostalgia to become the most interesting Terminator film since T2.
It was far from perfect, but for the first time in decades, we have a Terminator film that actually feels like a Terminator film - and that makes it worth your time.
