The Disaster Artist is a bizarre piece. Made by and for fans of the worst movie of all time, it's like a version of Ed Wood where the titular character is an enigmatic eccentric egomaniac rather than merely a starry-eyed incompetent. It's a weird film that embraces its weirdness with a tonally jarring (but infectious) innocence.

The centerpiece of the film is James Franco's role as Tommy Wiseau, the famously peculiar director of The Room. And his performance is worth the price of admission alone. From his mannerisms to his peculiar accent, Franco fully embodies Wiseau in one of the best leading performances of 2017. And as if to prove the authenticity of his performance, Franco goes up against the real life Wiseau in a post-credits scene.

That's right, if you stayed past the credits (we'll forgive you for not expecting a post-credits scene: after all, who would want Tommy Wiseau in the Avengers?) you were treated to Tommy Wiseau's contractually obligated cameo. It plays out like an acting challenge for Franco, having a meandering conversation with the real life inspiration behind his performance. It's a Mobius Strip of weird affectations that winds up being an excellent mic drop for Franco's feature film length impersonation.

Also, it's pretty surreal to see Tommy Wiseau appear in a movie that's properly lit and in focus.
