10 Unforgettable 2017 Movie Scenes
5. The Chase - Okja
Okja was the best movie that no one saw this year. This science fiction film is a perfect cocktail of director Bong Joon-Ho's strengths: A liberal parable about the moral issues of the meat industry, it somehow finds the time to be both a heartfelt story of a girl's pet super pig and a dark comedy about corporate posturing. There's also a showstopping chase sequence through the streets of Seoul around the midpoint of the film. And it's awesome.
The aforementioned sequence feels like Bong Joon-Ho attempting to one-up his 2006 creature feature The Host. While that film also followed a beast rampaging through Korea, it doesn't also attempt to empathize with the creature at the same time! It's a thrilling chase scene that keeps a bunch of balls in the air - multiple groups are trying to recapture this super pig for various agendas - while at the same time flipping back and forth between comedic beats and action thrills.
This scene fills downtown Seoul with lavish detail and just smashes through it with impressive abandon. It's the kind of scene where we don't question the woman running in front of the pig, capturing it all in selfie mode on her phone. And then it winds down with an Annie's song needle drop. Because how else could it end?
